ARCHIVES s RECORDS NATIONAL AND - 2 - SERVICE" I said that the United States Governzent must, of course, continue to have the mont complete freedom to discuse these and other satters with other Governments. No agreements vere made or contemplated in such talks, and certainly none would be tade affecting the interests of any countries not present. But, just as Australia must be free do diseuss matters as and when it chose, so me must be free, and I wished Mr. Evatt to be under no illusion about the matter but to understand that ve would continue to proceed as ve had. I pointed out that we were at all times willing and anxious to diacusa satters with the Australian Govern- ment, but that it would be quite impossible - if Mr. Evatt meant this - for us to undertake that we would dineuss no matter affecting the Far Esstorn ares except in the presence of mepresentative of Australia. I made it very clear again that our attitude on the peace treaty had not changed and that we vere continuing to explore in the Departsent the procedural difficulties which ao far had sade it impossible to proceed with a peace conference. The Arbassador secaed somewhat apologetic about the message which he had to deliver, and I assured hia that he must always feel perfectly free to come in to me with any sessages whatever from his Government, and that I would always try to deal with him frankly and clearly.
