    "ocrText": "664\nDEPARTMENT OF STATE\n31\nMemorandum of Conversation\nDATE: December 5, 1949\nSUBJECT:\nItaly and Africa\nPARTICIPANTS:\nThe Secretary\nThe Italian Ambassador\nMr. Aghilles, WE\nCOPIES TO:\nS/S\nEmbassy Rome\nEUR\nEmbassy London\nNEA\nEmbassy Addis Ababa\nAF\n1-1493\nThe Ambassador called at his request to discuss a number of\nquestions and began by expressing general satisfaction with the\noutcome of the General Assembly' discussion of the former Italian\ncolonies. The decisions taken were not wholly satisfactory to\nanyone but he considered them to be generally the best solution\nobtainable and that a generally accepted solution was preferable\nto an easy victory for any particular party.\nHe referred to his Government's desire for the restoration of\nnormal relations with Ethiopha. The Italian Gowernment had been\ncured of any such \"criminal adventures as Mussolini's and of any\ndesire for imperialism or colonialism in Africa, It did wish for\nnormal, mutually beneficial relations with the Ethiopian Government\nand for progress in discussions with it of such matters as repara-\ntions and the frontier between Ethiopãa and Italian Somaliland.\nI expressed appreciation for his Government's attitude and said\nthat it is particularly important that neither the Italian nor\nEthiopian Government or any other government attempt to influence\nthe eventual UN decision on Eritrea by agitation or any other unwise\nmeans, I expressed confidence that we could find means of giving\nsimilar counsel to the Ethiopians, of advising them of the Italian\nGovernment' S attitude and, if possible, of being of assistance in\nfacilitating the resumption of normal relations.\nDECLASSIFIED\nE.
