Meeting with the President
Item 1. Meeting of the President and General MacArthur
The President went over with me his meeting with General
MacArthur and also discussed his San Francisco speech. I left
with him the summary of foreign opinion, both on the Wake meet-
ing and on the San Francisco speech.
The President was highly pleased with the results of the
meeting. He told me that he had before the meeting been aware
of the possibility of things going wrong and he was, therefore,
particularly glad that all of the pitfalls had been avoided and
that the meeting had been successful.
The President spoke very highly of Ambassador Muccio
and was particularly gratified at the obviously good relationship
which existed between the Ambassador and General MacArthur.
The President believed that the meeting had given him an under-
standing and feel of the situation which he had not had before.
