Mr. Doidge paid a courtesy call on the Secretery (and subsequently
on the President) on his way beck to New Zealand from the General
Assembly.
Mr. Doidge started the convorsation with the Secretary by saying
how pleased he was, and he thought this was the general sentiment, by
the new lease on life of the United Nations. lie said he thought the
Assembly was demonstrating its effectiveness and there was now a hope
for peace in the world. Mr. Doidge paid a tribute to the United
States Delegation to the UN and said he enjoyed the many conversations
he had with the members, particularly a long talk with Mr. Dulles.
The Secretary agreed with Mr. Doidge's satisfaction with the work of
the Assembly.
Mr. Doidge asked the Secretary how long he thought the fighting
in Korea would last and whether the New Zoaland forces, which vould soon be
trained and roady to sail, should go to Korea. The Secretary said
that we, and General Macarthur in particular, are very optinistic
that the fighting in Korea would soon be over. There would, however,
be guerilla actions which, in the main, the South Korean troops could
handle.
