March 19, 1951
The Attorney General telephoned the Secretary this
morning and said he had entertained the Irish Ambassador
over the weekend in Rhode Island and the Ambassador asked
him to a rrange for Mr. McBride to call on the President
before he leaves the country. Mr. McGrath said he had talked
with the President this morning on another matter and had
mentioned this matter to him. The President said he would
be glad to see Mr. McBride on Friday if Secretary Acheson
approved; that it should be checked with him. Mr. McGrath
said it was his intent to check anyway.
The Secretary said he would look into this right away.
He said the Department tried to hold down calls of Foreign
Ministers on the President so that all of them would not feel
that they had to do this. He said as regards the Irish Foreign
Minister, he will probably say that he discussed the partition
question with the President and this will get the British
excited. Mr. McGrath suggested someone in the Department
talk with the Ambassador regarding what should be said following
the call on the President.
The Secretary said he would call Mr. McGrath about
this.
