GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE 16-61120-1 The Belgian Ambassador called today at his request. He stated that he would be leaving Washington shortly for a prolonged vacation during which he would visit Bel- gium and the Belgian Congo. He added that he was very interested in visiting the Congo since he had never been there before and his tour of that area would be quite extensive. I remarked that it did not seem to me that he was taking much of a vacation and I expressed my hope that he would find some time for rest and relaxation. The Ambassador stated that he would report to Mr. Van Zeeland, his Foreign Minister, when he returned to Brussels and asked if there was any new information regarding the proposed NATO meeting. I told the Ambassador that I had just received a telegram from Mr. Spofford who had been in touch with Mr. Van Zeeland about this matter. While I had not had time to study the situation thoroughly, at first glance it appeared to me that possible two meetings would be in order since there were some urgent matters which DECLASSIFIED E.
