At his own request, Mr. Neri, the Philippine Under Secretary
of Foreign Affairs, called on the Secretary this afternoon to pay
his respects. After expressing his pleasure at being able to
call on the Secretary, Mr. Neri said that this was his first visit
to the United States and that he was on a trip around the world
to inspect the Philippine Foreign Service establishments. He
said that in the offices he had already visited, he had been
particularly impressed by the beneficial results which had arisen
from the training by the Department of State of the first group
of Philippine Foreign Service officers. He expressed the gratitude
of his Government for this training. He hoped that on his next
visit he would be able to spend more time in the United States but
that the pending political conventions and fall elections required
him to be back in Manila by the end of the summer. As Mr. Neri
left, the Secretary requested him to convey his warmest regards
to President Quirino and General Romulo.
