m. asbionnan 947 DEPARTMENT OF STATE Memorandum of Conversation 1099 DE DATE: August 23, 1951 SUBJECT: First Call of the Ambassador-designate of Czechoslovakia PARTICIPANTS: The Secretary The Ambassador-designate John F. Simmons, Chief of Protocol Jan Vinar, First Secretary, Chargé d'Affaires COPIES TO: ad interim S S/S 8/8-PR EUR EE 1-1493 His Excelleney Dr. Vladimir Prochazka, newly appointed Ambassador of Czechoslovakia, called on me today at 2:30 p.m. to present copies of his credentials and to request an appointment with the President. The conversation was of very short duration and the Ambassador remained in my office for a period of approximately five minutes. The Ambassador expressed his gratification at being appointed to this post. I told him that, although I knew it was not customary to discuss business matters before he had presented his credentials to the President, I nevertheless wanted to say that as soon as he had done so , 1 would notify him to call here to have an exhaustive discussion about the Oatis case. 1 emphasized that this Government feels very strongly about the matter, which is a most distressing one, and that I would count upon his help to find a satisfactory solution. I told the Ambassador that we would arrange a time for him to present his credentials to the President at the White House. Aside from the above, no matters of a political nature were discussed.
