Mr. Lovett called Mr. Acheson this morning regarding the
current difficulties with Egypt. He said that the Defense Depart -
ment had taken the matter up in the Policy Committee yesterday
in the light of Mr. Morrison's message to Mr. Acheson. He ssid
they had considered what steps Defense might be asked to take
by the State Department. He said that he thought there was no
possibility of our being in a position to commit troops, but that
it was generally felt that we could support the British in the
United Nations and internationally.
Mr. Lovett asked whether we had communicated with out
Embassies and Missions in the Arab world with a view toward
making these countries understand the utter chaos and confusion
which would result from unilateral abrogation of treaties in the
way that Egypt had recently done.
Mr. Acheson said that we had sent out one message based
on our proposal to Egypt and stating why we thought such an ap
-
proach was the way to settle the matter, whibh had had a pretty
good response. Mr. Acheson said that our judgment would hinge
# little on what happened there. Both Mr. Acheson and Mr. Lovett
agreed that the situation was extremely serious in that part of
the world, and that we might take a new look and see whether
another circular instruction should go out.
The Secretary said that he would look into this matter and
call Mr. Lovett back.
