During a conversation on other matters this morning
Mr. Acheson mentioned to Mr. Lovett that he wanted him to
consider and talk to him sometime about how the Defense
and State Departments might continue to work dosely together.
Mr. Acheson said he was very anxious to do what Mr. Lovett
wanted and that if there was any arrangement of any sort which
Mr. Lovett wanted in effect, we would do our best to work it
out.
Mr. Lovett said that he thought the present informal arrange-
ment for full lateral conversations at whatever level necessary
was extremely good. Both Mr. Acheson and Mr. Lovett agreed
that it had been a useful practice to have people in both Depart-
ments dealing frequently with each other on all matters.
Mr. Lovett suggested the arrangement continue exactly as it
is.
Mr. Lovett mentioned that there was no difference between
the Secretary and the Deputy Secretary of Defense as far as
work assignment was concerned and that they were trying to
keep an arrangement whereby there was no differentiation be-
tween the two so that all mail came through both, etc.
