Sir Oliver said that he had a message from Mr. Churchill
which indicated that the following schedule would be suitable
for him:
January 3
- Arrive Washington
January 8, evening
- Depart Washington for New York
January 9 - 11
- New York
January 12 - 15
- Ottawa
January 16 - 18
- Washington
In the discussion which followed, it appeared that
if he were to address the Congress, January 17 might be
the most desirable date. It was also indicated that he
did not wish to speak elsewhere in the United States
before addressing Congress, if he were to address it.
It was indicated that if this schedule were carried
out, Mr. Eden would return home after the stay in New
York and would not visit Ottawa. It was tentatively
agreed that meetings between the President and the Prime
Minister would take place on the 4th and 5th of January,
and probably a meeting on the 8th of January before he
departed for New York. On his return to Washington there
might be a meeting on the 16th and if necessary to conclude
the communique, one on the 18th. I indicated that I would
discuss the matter with the President tomorrow to see if
this were agreeable to him and would also discuss with
the President" the proprieties could be observed in
connection with an invitation for the Prime Minister to
address the Congress.
