It began with the good words which his collaborators had induced
him to accept and ended with a glimpse of the old Adam showing
through.
I hope most earnestly that the ministerial meetings on the
EDC which are set for January 26 will produce enough agreement
so that at least in principle the EDC can be agreed to before
Lisbon. If that and the contractual relations with Germany and
the attitude of the Governments toward the TCC report are all
at sixes and sevens, by the time we get to Lisbon, I am afraid
that that meeting will have bad repercussions.
Your letter to Stikker was very helpful. I had a long talk with
the Prime Minister, Mr. Drees, when he was here, preceded by
talks with the Netherlands Ambassador and messages to Van
Zeeland. Dave Bruce has been hard at work. I hope that between
us all we can help the January meeting to reach agreement.
I was delighted that you wanted my photograph and have sent
it off to you by Stanley. Don't you agree that the sound principles
of mutual assistance require that I should have your well-
remembered countenance to support and comfort me amid the
changes and chances of this life. I should like to have it very
much.
Alice sends her love to you and Marjon, as do I. She hopes to
see you both at Lisbon on the 16th if the United States Air Force
will transport her.
As ever,
