MEMORANDUM OF CONVERSATION WITH THE PRESIDENT
Item 1. Prime Minister Menzies
The President readily agreed to have a word with the
Prime Minister after luncheon. When that time came he and
I were taken into one of the White House sitting rooms by the
President where we talked for half an hour. Most of the
talk was purely social. Mr. Menzies mentioned the importance
which his Government attached to the Pacific Council and hoped
that a meeting might be held soon and that the Couneil might
take on real significance. The President spoke of the importance
which he attached to the matter and said that he hoped there
could be an early meeting. He hoped that the meeting could
be in Australia and that I could attend it. Mr. Menzies thought
that this would make a favorable impression in Australia.
The President asked him to pursue the matter further with
me and this he did at our meeting this afternoon.
