His Excellency Eikichi Araki, newly appointed Ambassador of
Japan, called on me at 3:45 p.M. today to present copies of his
credentials and to request an appointment with the President.
After the usual exchange of courtesies, the Ambassador as-
sured me that he was greatly honored by his appointment as Am-
bassador to the United States and that he would do everything
in his power to help in the good relations so necessary between
Japan and the United States.
The Ambassador spoke highly of President Truman and of the
admiration of the Japanese Government and people both for the
President and for the people of the United States. I assured
the Ambassador that he could count on me to do everyt ing pos-
sible to help him in his new tasks here and that he could
always call upon the officers of the Department for assistance
in the many questions of mutual interest which might arise.
No matters of a political nature were discussed.
