The Ambassador then asiced whether I could maice any general observation of Interest to his country which he could report. 1 said that he vould be able to get en obsorvation of that sort which vould be much more pertinent from the Acting Secretary since he Mat in entire charge of the Department and I vas opagentrating on matters before the General Assembly. I could only any, as I had said ao many tines to the Ambassador, that I Vala to see closer relations growing between Tugoalavia and the United States and also between Yagoolavie, and Turkey. All of this secmed to me in of our comson Interest in defense. Aa the Ambasandor well knea, I continned to be diaturbed at the lacic of progress in resehing a settlement of the Trieste question. It seemed to me clear that a effective cocperation in the military field depended in the long run upon better relations between and Italy and this, in turn, depended upon the solution of Triesto. I continued to feel, as I had so often said, that if both sides vould approseh this matter in a spirit of goodvill and matual adjustment, the matter enuld be solved. The Ambassador soid that he asd not think the Italians wäshed to golve that after Nr. visit to Tugoslavia his country had been estaciced in the Italian preas, and that experience of Italian poliey had been ao long and 00 asffieult that his countrymen vere inclined to be less hopeful then others who vera less intimately concerned. I said that I 634 not wish to be in a position of en advodate of either country before the other. I vished to advocate only one thing. and that de that a solution should be resched. I felt it could be ronthed if both vould approsch it with a real desire to solve 11 and in the spirit of goodvill. I did not wish to turn our neeting into a discussion of Trieste but since he hed asiced ne for a general observation I could not overlodk what semed to me to be the nost important question still unsolved. The Ambessador then thenked ma for that I had done in the past yeare in improving relations with his country and, on departing, again referred to his regnest that I do what I ceuld to help in the matter of the drought assistance to his country.
