MEMORANDUM FOR s/s
Subject: Trieste
On Tuesday afternoon the Secretary spoke briefly to
Foreign Secretary Eden regarding Trieste. He said he urged
Eden to consider theposition which we understood had now been
worked out between the British Foreign Office and our Embassy
in London. The Secretary told Mr. Eden he thought the Depart-
ment of State and the Foreign Office were nov agreed to proceed
on the Trieste plan and that what was required was that
Mr. Eden should inform himself fully and give the green light
from the British side. Mr. Eden indicated that this vas his
intention.
The Secretary remarked to me that he did not mention an
approach to the French nor go into the details of the plan
because he felt that Eden was not intimately familiar with the
subject and vould depend almost entirely on the recommendation
which the Foreign Office would make to him. He said that in
effect he had told Mr. Eden to have a look at the plan and
reverse himself on his previous position on the matter.
