Mr. MeGeorge Bundy
-
3 - Personal and Confidential
You can see how pursuing these lines of thought
brings us back to the questions you discussed; that is,
who should be present and what sort of a record should
be kept. This, in turn, gets back to the question of
what it is in my memory and experience which those of
you who have been so kindly interested in this proposal
think should be preserved. I am not sure that I am in
a
good position to knov about this. Some things which
seem to me unimportant because very familiar may seem
more important to you.
One piece of sage advice which I have received
is that we should start sone how, see what happens,
and see whether it is worthwhile. But it seems to me
ARCHIVES KECORDS AND

a little difficult even to start until I am a little
Es
clearer what it is that we are starting upon.
It may be that a meeting of some few people
somewhere to discuss the matter further might help
clarify my mind. It may be that you and Oppie can
do this without a meeting.
I had planned to write Oppie, if only to report
that I have nothing to report, but your letter has
brought out some of the questions more clearly than
they vere before, and I know he will forgive me for
taking this method of pursuing clarification.
In reponse to your question about Bill's and
Mary's plans, I gather from what Whit Griswold has
told me, but not from anything Bill has said, that
no developments are in the of fing at present.
As ever,
