Mr. Dean G. Acheson
701 Union Trust Building

Dear Mr. Acheson:
A careful reading of your memorandum on the remaining
three seminar meetings leaves me with the impression that
there is little need for further chronological synopses.
If you think it is advisable, on the other hand, perhaps
I can gather and summarize certain key documents that might
be pertinent to the discussions. The Bell Mission Report
would be an instance of this.
I am enclosing a chapter from my roommate's dissertation
on the Japanese Peace Treaty. The full chronological story
would seem to be neatly and fully spelled out and may prove
very useful to you. If you regard it worthy of circulation
to the rest of the seminar members, kindly return it and I'll
ask the Institute to have it mimeographed. If you don't think
this is necessary or desirable, I'd appreciate your returning it to
me when you've finished with it.
Sincerely yours,
S.

P.S. May I offer one possibility for discussion: that it might
be useful to conclude the MacArthur episode with a brief analysis
of exactly what was accomplished and/or settled by the lengthy
hearings subsequent to his dismissal.
