If\nI ever got convinced of what you say about me,\nI should be quite insufferable and would, into\nthe bargain, lose all capacity to write for\nmarveling at myself. But your letter is pleas-\nant to read and good of you to write.\nYour suggestions about the next order\nof business seem feasible and interesting. A\nproblem arises about the Maryland story since\nall parties are very much alive and remain my\nfriends and neighbors. True they don't read\nHarper's; but is that security enough against\nhurting their feelings? They took it all, nat-\nurally enough, very, very seriously.\nYou ask whether it is \"absolutely\nimperative\" that I practice law. No, not ab-\nsolutely, but it helps with the grocery bills\nand is not too exacting. Then, too, one cannot\nbecome too purposeful without endangering one's\nserendipity. The years, both those during which\nI was unfaithful to this \"jealous mistress\" and\nthose which are now merely passing, will, I\nbelieve, pretty well take care of the problem.\nNow for the project we talked about.\nI was only half serious when we discussed it,\nbut I have become more so since. C.\n-2-\nstep towards decision is to look the material\nover. Barbara will be back on Monday. I shall\ntalk with her about it to see if she remembers\nany restrictions I have forgotten and to get\nher thoughts about it. Then, perhaps, you had\nbetter read it through to form an idea of its\ncondition and volume. To check it all against\nthe files even if they would be available at\nIndependence or the Department or both would\nbe a vast job. In places, as, for instance,\nabout the Cleveland Mississippi speech in May,\n1947--I have been told and believe--see Joe\nJones, Fifteen Weeks-that my memory was faulty.\nBut nonetheless the material should be read.\nIt is in 10 folders of about 60 pages each.\nWe shall try to make it available to you when\nyou want to get at it.\nYours,\nU.S. SERVICE\" S.
