Princeton Papers
Sharfman, Peter
Appointments 1967
November 30, 1967
Dear Mr. Sharfman:
I hope the difficulties at your home have
lessened by now.
I asked Mr. Acheson about your requests
to cite or photostat the material in the Prince-
ton Papers. As I thought would be the case,
he has said no citing, no photostating. This
may change your plans to come to Washington,
though you are still welcome to see the material
for your background information.
Sincerely yours,

Mr. Scharfman (?) the Ph.D. candidate who came in to look
at your manuscript and the Princeton Papers is a real leach,
as you say, and he will be coming back now or in January.
He wants to know about citing the Princeton Papers. Our
file shows that in 1964 you wrote David McClellan, after
having given him earlierppermission to quote and cite
Princeton transcript, that you did not want him to quote
any more from it, as "from now on, I reserve all quotations
of myself to myself." I do not see anything specific about citing.
In 1963 you wrote Logan that he could refer to the papers
as "personal papers,' not, as he had requested "personal
manuscript material. "
He would also like to photostat certain pages, where you
lay out the reasons (nine, I believe) why the German
situation had changed with the Korean war. I am sure
before you give permission to do this you would want to
see just what it is, and I do not have the exact reference.
However, you may just want to say a flat "no" to this.
May I tell him:
He can refer to having seen personal papers of
Mr. Acheson, with no quotations from them.

Washington, D.C.
Dear Miss Evans:
Thank you very much for the help you gave me Tuesday
and yesterday. The materials that Mr. Acheson agreed to let
me see are quite central to the dissertation I am writing,
and you made consulting them as easy as possible.
It seems that I will not be able to return to Washington
this weekend, owing to difficulties here at home.
As you suggested, I shall plan to come to Washington
again sometime after J anuary 6, and spend as much time as
is needed (I would guess 10-20 hours, depending on whether
any photocopying is possible) with the draft memoirs. I
hope this will not cause you too much inconvenience.
If you should wish to get in touch with me, my address
in Chicago is: 5462 S. Cornell Ave., Chicago, Illinois 60615.
