the British correspondents were completely frank, and had different attitudes toward the
American press, even within this limited framework - did you have serious breaches of
confidence? Or are these things you're gong to bring up anyway, later.
DA. Well, I never wanted to find out, because when I was Under Secretary, there
was a situation which they themselves explained perfectly frankly to me, in which the
3 news INS AND UP--had gotten into a row because once somebody broke an
off-the-record commitment. After that, no one of them was willing to trust the other
two.
