7/16/53 - 19 us...we'd love to hear it, it would be wonderful. But you just can't trust us because we can't trust ourselves, and therefore something really juicy-- we have to break it, because each one of us thinks the other two will, and they were very frank about that. Also, you got into this sort of a difficulty. Aside from that particular thing, it was not often that somebody would breach a confidence and say "Acheson said this." But you get a very shrewd, able man--ceotty Reston is one of then-who has got 3/4 of a story but he hasn't 1di got the thing which is necessary to put it together. Now ** you tell he him the missing thing on off-the-record basis and he will print the story which/otherwise wouldn't print. Perhaps not using the point that you made, so perfectly ? honorable with you, I'm on to you he's got all the rest of it, and then you give him . So it's dangerous in that way. And these people are under a good deal of competition. The introduction of the by-line very widely, in American journalism has put pressure on these fellows to get their own particular story in, with their name on it. Q. Don't they preserve technical integrity by using what you've told them off-the- somebody record as basis for questions which they will ask/at the British Embassy or somewhere else, and get it from them and they can say, "We didn't get it from you, we got from British the DA. It's a very very tricky thing, too. On April 19, 1949 there was a memorandum in my book: "Following is the list of newspapermen who met with the Secretary and Mr. Webb at the Hotel, Tuesday, April 19, 1949 at 5:15." They been trying to get me to go to dinner and I couldn't for some reason or other, so they said, will you come by for half an hour or so. "Tom Reynolds of the Chicago Sun; Eddie , Assoc. United Press; Ned Roberts, Press; John Rightman (?), INS; Jack Horner, Washington Star; Murray Marter (?) Washington Post; Bert Huland (?), New York Times; Dick Stokes, St.Louis Post Dispatch; Fitzhugh Turner, N. Y.Herlad Tribune; Delos (?) Vandenventer, New York Post; John O'Brien, Phila. Inquirery Harold Gilpatrick, San Francisco Chronicle." Well, that I used to do quite regularly. Q. All the way through
