7/16/53 - 48 There were some entertaining aspects of the security business. They attached to Foster, and to me, always, when I was in Paris, an Inspector. I had two in the four years; one was away or something, wasn't anctit available, but usually it was one of these two men. We became very great friends and thoroughly attached to one mother, and he used to go everywhere that I went. I used to walk down in the morning to get some air, on the Left side, and at his request we varied the route so that we didn't have one route, but one day we'd walked down the Left Bank, and there was another walk down the Right Bank, and there was another walk that cut over through the Archli de Triompheand dom the Champs Elyseé; there was another that went up the Ave. s and then cut down a large Boulevard which came in. I've forgotten the name of that street. But weid do these in no regular order, not because they were particularly alarmed but they thought it undesirable, and it shouldn't be predictable where I was going to go. He, the Inspector, Lulce and I and quite often Dave Bruce, unless Dave had some reason to be down there a little early, would walk together. One day we were walking along and the Ambassador was not there-Luke, the Inspector, and I were walking along. Luke had told me that he had inquired about what his functions in regard to my security were, and he said that the only reply he got was that he had no special instructions but if I were shot and he came back alive he would be fired. about that as he about did/everytling else. One day we were going along and Luke got more and mare silent, and more and more worried about something. And finally, he was one one side of me and he said, the Inspector on the other, and he said to me,"I don't want to alarm you, but Inspec- tor zon' I think you ought to know that there's a car following us." The Inspector said, "Yes, it's mine." So he walked with me and then there was this police car with mare officers which would go along very slowly, about 20 feet behind. Q. It was quite nerve-wrecking 11 dich't know what it was. DA. The Inppector, in talking with Luke, told him that he had also taken care of General Mershall, and that this was a very desirable assignment to have on account of or the Embassy residence the opportunity to get some food. He would have some meals at the Embassy, or he would
