MB. Well, there is no reason why you should stop(because of me. It will make no difference)
DA. Well, we will (put the?) main thing in while you are here, and then we can put any
other
smaller things in afterwards. The final meetings took place on Monday, June 20.
There was a meeting at 3 o'clock, and a meeting at em maybe 4, or shortly after that - this
so-called
plenary meeting. I think it was at the secret one, the final working one, that
Vishinsky agreed to strike out those words. That was my recollection, because it involved
re-typing the communique. We then had a thing that I'll go back to for purposes of the
story, in other words, we had this final semi-public meeting, at which ceremonial things
went on. We then adjourned, and the whole CFM was over. I went back to the Embassy, and
the
ministers went to their places, and we issued the communique. It was given out by the
secfetariat at the Palis Rose, and by our own, office. At 7:30 I was conducting a press
conference, in which I was telling our press people about this matter, and I think Chip
came in, and gave me a note, which said that Vishinsky had just telephoned, and said that
he wished to recall the communique, and have to have a further meeting of the CFM.
I
talked to Chip for a moment. There was some curiosity at the press conference. I think
I
told Chip to say that we couldn't and wouldn't recall the communique, because it was out,
and
we
just wouldn' have anything to do with such and idea. I think I first said that I
saw no purpose in having a further meeting, but, Chip then went out and telephoned, and
came back, and thought that I should 80, so I said I would. As soon a.s Chip went out the
first time, someone in the press conference asked me if it was something that I could share
no
with them, and I said, sure, I was glad to. So I read them this note, and in
the
conference
would believe this. They said, "Is this a gag?" I said, "No, this isn't a gag.
This is a fact; here it is. So, great excitement about this, and the press conference
busted up, and there was a terrific rush of people to get the cables and telephones,
and
say that all hell had broken loose again. We then went over to the Quai l'Orsai, where
that episode occured that I told you about: Ernie and me arriving arrivingx in the elevator
