S AREHINES & "NATIONAL REC ADMIN ORDS I Q. Three or four days later the next Press conference. DA. Well, that of course, added a great deal of heat to it, but it was certainly not that, as you can see from this whole development, which brings in the tremendous amount of public incentive. McCormick's, etc., attack on me, the China policy. and unhappily Phil-- a perfectly innocent guy-gets drawn into this thing=-my being the editor of the White Paper. PJ. Don't want to be distinguished there by professing your own guilt there, do you? (laughter) Q. Sir, in considering the time, I think McCarthy had mentioned Phil before the 28th of March, I believe. McCarthy's original attacks were started on the 8th, 9th and 12th of February in Wheeling and Salt Leke City. Now, no names were mentioned then, except Q. Hanson comes out in March. I thought he preceeding Phil. Q. No, sir. He didn't. Phil was involved primarily in McCarthy's speech-weither 57 or 85-I forget which one--81 Communists speech was on the 20th of February and no names were mentioned. Incidentally, Phil, in the list that was supplied, or subpeonaed, to back up thatewyour name was number 19. which was an open slot. He hadn't actually mentioned 81 names, you had. mentioned directly about 75 names=wbut he just skipped going from 17 to 18 to 20, you see-whe did that in a variety of cases thereby giving himself I don't believe this was.. I think it was sloppy in the first place, but he took a dvantage of it later, when he said that the one I had for number 19 all along was Phil Jessup. I don't think he went a fter Phil in his original attack. by indirection on his attack on this lady judge up in New York--Dorothy Kenny. In his statement on that he devoted about a page and a half to taking after you-=that was a little bit earlier than the 20th of March, I think. Q. About the time of February? Q. No, I'd say it was about the first of March.
