I don't think that it's too useful to try to go into\nthe details of what thoge vere, because el though they were important\nthe fact vas thet as the men met to r esolve this question they had less\nscope and less freedom than they had had before.\nMR. JOHUTSON:\nThis is where the Sear question began to becone really 1 portant in\nthis period.\nMR. ACHESON:\nThis became very importent at this time. It always aroge. Somebody\nteed off on the Saar just as we vere getting close to an agreement on\n&\nsomething or other because it vas a sure trouble breeder and somebody\nso\nany\nalways said the wrong thing at the wrong time. Dut it became very\nactive here. \"hile this vas going on, King George VI died on February6\nand we had proposed to have a meeting before the Lisbon Conference, which\nwas\n/called, I think, for the 2nd of March.\nearly in\nVoice:\nIt was originally called for the first of February and vas postponed\nto thetaidele of February, I think.\nMR. ACHESON:\nIt was postponed af tor the King's death, wasn't it?\nVOICE:\nIt was postponed again; it hed been postponed once before that.\nMit. ACHISON:\nBut we were to have a meeting, in any event, before Lisbon. The King's\ndeath changed this around a little bit and I vas going over anyway and\nthe President decided it was a good thing for me to be unde a special\nAmbassador for the purpose of attending the King's funeral, and that\nbegan to make dates certain. We arrived in London on the 15th -on the\n13th of Debruary. We immediately began to do some business. Spofford\nand I had a long telk with Pearsou, I see from my appointment book."
