MR. JESSUP:
But British certainly would not say that we were the great defenders of
the status quo in Egypt.
VOICE:
Nor the French wouldn't say so about North Africa.
MR. JESSUP:
In fact, we've done nothing really to embarrass them in either place.
We've been extremely cautions both in North Africa and in Egypt.
VOICE:
(confused) well, I think Sudan represents a certain amount of pressure.
VOICE:
But I don't believe this point; this is a philosophical point (laughter)
MR. JESSUP: ?
One problem that is created in countries like these Middle Eastern countries,
mr. maghee
thexxinxfast countries that are newly independent. They in fact are
neither independent nor are they colonial. And a country in between, which
is neither independent nor colonial acts in a peculiar way. They know they
are not independent and they have psychoses as a result. That is why when
TRUMAN,
you get in a position such as we are, you demand a short-term stability.

stability, or, to think of going to the other extreme to make them inde-
pendent countries to get over this psychoses which leads to neutralism.
But one of our problems is that we got caught in mid-stream with a number
of these countries in the process of their passing from being a colonial
possession to being an independent country. I think that is the basic
problem we face, for example, with dealing with a country like Syria, which
knows it's still politically dominated by the French, or Iraq knows its
pretty well still dominated by the British and is going to be neutralist
because of that. If we go back to reimpose colonial control it would be
much simpler for this short-term period.
VOICE:
But that isn't possible.
VOICE:
No, I don't think it is. It probably is best from the standpoint of
Mr me glue
achieving our objectives -- if we were trying to achieve short
term stability.
