MEMORANDUM FOR DR. STEELMAN
I was informed today by a reliable source, who prefers to
remain nameless, that the fringe awards in the steel case have
been in effect for several years in the brass industry -- which
operates on approximately as continuous a basis as does the
steel industry. Since the steel companies have raised quite
a hullabaloo about their difficulty in putting the fringe
awards into effect because of their necessarily continuous
operations, it occurred to me that this information might be
of possible benefit to you in connection with the present
negotiations.
Specifically in the case of Bridgeport Brass, the contract
calls for double time on Sundays, time and a half on Saturdays,
seven paid holidays, and at least a 10 percent shift differen-
tial. These arrangements are all somewhat more generous than
those recommended by the WSB in the steel case, and yet they
have caused no difficulty for the continuous operations of
the brass industry.
