Meeting of Mr. Murray, Mr. Stephens,
Dr. Steelman and Mr. Stowe
Immediately after the release of Dr. Steelman's official statement
Mr. Murray, Mr. Stephens, Dr. Steelman and Mr. Stowe met with a view
to discussing statements to be issued by the parties. Mr. Stephens
made a long and impassionate plea to Mr. Murray that no incriminating
or acrimonious statement should be made, indicating that in his opinion
many things that Mr. Murray had long sought for in the steel industry,
including meeting with the top officers (presidents), had been accomplished
and that the si tuation could revert back to the condition that had
existed in the past. However, Mr. Murray was quite firm in his
insistence upon issuing a statement and answering questions concerning
the negotiations. He said he felt he owed it to his people. Mr.
Stephens urged that he not make a statement but, recognizing that he
would have to report to his union, that he not say anything until his
union convention opened one week from next Tuesday. This Mr. Murray
declined to do, and the conference was ended.
A copy of Mr. Murray's statement is attached.
No official record was made of Mr. Murray's response to questions.
The companies did not furnish a copy of their statement.
