-2- Mr. Fairless' remarks lead Dr. Steelman to believe that the steel companies for the first time seemed to be prepared to honestly negotiate. Furthermore, Mr. Fairless indicated that they were going to negotiate without strings (that is, without relation to prices) and at the proper time it probably would be necessary for him to talk about prices. However, he wanted to be free at this time to state clearly that he had not discussed any price matters with Dr. Steelman. The working committee adjourned for lunch at about 1:20 at which time Mr. Stowe had a chance to talk with Mr. Goldberg. He said it seemed to him that the steel companies really had the intention of bargaining although it was a little early to come to a conclusion but up to that point the meetings had been amicable and profitable. He further indicated that after Dr. Steelman and Mr. Stowe left the joint meeting Mr. White suggested they adjourn to a hotel for discussions but Mr. Fairless said he felt that they should remain here for discussions. The subcommittee returned at 3:15 and went into sessions and remained there until 7:20 p.m. at which time they adjourned for the evening, indicating to the press that they planned to return at 10 a.m. the next day.
