DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE NATIONAL PRODUCTION AUTHORITY WASHINGTON 25 June 25, 1952 Ref: LRD David J. McDonald, Secretary-Treastrer United Steelworkers of America, CIO 1500 Commonwealth Building Pittsburgh 22, Pennsylvania Dear Sir and Brother: Concerning the symbols appearing on rated orders to identify materials needed for the A, B, C, E, and Z-2 programs, let me point out that some of these symbols may be preceded by the letters "DO", e.g., DO-AZ, DO-C5, etc. I hope all of the local union people will understand that the "DO" simply means "Defense Order" and the suffix indicates. the program in which the material will be used, as outlined in the material sent you on June 18. (The "DO" prefix will appear on orders for high alloy material where the steel FRUMAN, content is less than 50 percent.) Gy -NATIONAL RECORDS ADMING ARCHIVES& This explanation may be unnecessary but I wanted to pass it on to you just in case the question was raised by any local union people. Sincerely and fraternally, Ted F. Silvey Deputy Assistant Administrator Office of Labor National Production Authori ty
