STATEMENT OF PHILIP MURRAY, PRESIDENT, UNITED STEELWORKERS OF AMERICA
- Sunday, May 49 1952 -
The Union came to the White House at the request of the President of
the United States prepared to negotiate a settlement of this long dispute.
The Companies, however, made no effort to negotiate in good faith. They
merely repeated the inadequate offer they made in New York more than three
weeks ago and they expressly conditioned this offer upon the Government's
granting them price increases beyond those allowable under the Governnent's
stabilization policies.
The Companies' adamant insistence upon a Government guarantee of un-
warranted price relier has resulted in a breakdown of these conferences.
The actual situation, therefore, is that the Companies are on a strike
against collective bargaining which they will settle only at the expense
of the American public.
We deeply regret that even at this late date the Companies are unvill-
ing to conclude a fair and equitable settlement with the Union and we shall
so advise our membership.
