Eichelberger Diary, 24 Oct 45 - 31 Dec 46 (gr. knox for Auy - 230c445) 24 Oct 45 - word rec'd early that McCloy had been on teletype w/ Wash. almost whole night - program postponed a day (evid. re McCloy's sightseeing and inspection) - lunch w/ Lindsay Parrott (NYT) and Frank Kelley (NYHT) and Brigadier Anderson mecisy 25 Oct 45 - met McCloy landparty 0800 at Imperial Hotel - full program, incl inspection of barracks, div. review, and lunch - orientation for McCloy and Col. Bonesteel at E's office re 8th Army activities - McCloy left later in eve. for Tokyo 28 Oct 45 - rec'd first word of nomination for perm. promotion to BG 5 Nov 45 - trip to Seoul (ret'd 6 Nov, w/ slight detour by plane in/o to circle Hiroshima - "an excellent view of the almost unbelievable destruction") (n.b. E. travelled much throughout J, mostly btwn Sendai and Yoko., on inspection trips w/ visiting dignitaries and dele- gations) 11 Nov 45 - during ride town Omiya and Kagohara - "Everywhere we go we see the usual crowds of staring J who seem to be perfectly fascinated by this train. There is no resentmt at all. In fact I am beginning to think they like the Am military better than their own." " 13 Nov 45 - gen'l staff conf. in office re gripes appearing in Stars & Stripes - went to Tokyo to see MacA in afternoon - Gen. Kenney had arrived in office of CinC first; saw Kenny for few mins and he said there was little chance for early passage of promotion bill (had just returned from US) - presented MacA w/ two fine swords, which he obviously enjoyed - MacA sugg. E. leave for home early in Dec. and return early in Jan. - will plan on thay - E. mentioned difficulties in getting replies to requests for xxoxx decorations - MacA seemed surprised at this but glad E. had brought it to his attn 18 Nov 45 - reception for Lord Alanbrooke, Gen. Gairdner, Lt. Col. Charrington, and Lt. Cole Boyle in eve. - guests amazed at fine food E's house staff had provided (pheasant, rock lobster, peach melba, lettuce salad, etc.) - "Lord Alanbrooke seemed to have been quite impressed w/ SCAP particularly in his frankness and candor in his dislike XX for the Russians. 17 Nov 45 - had appt in late afternoon w/ Mr. Suzuki, head of J liaison committee (CLO?) and Gen. Kamata - they are worried about rumor that J army pensions are to be discontinued - E. told them had no infor on this himself and that any directive wld come from SCAP - they invited him to dinner in his honor 2 Dec 45 21 Nov 45 - went to Nikko w/ party incl. Lord Alanbrooke - on return trip, when train stopped at Utsunomiya, E. rec'd msg MacA wished to see him upon arrival in Tokyo - when saw MacA, discussed TS radio re E's future status in Army - E told MacA wld not make any decision then but wld return next day to give his answer - later discussed this w/ Gen Bowen, Gen Tomkins, Gen Ryder, Gen McGinley, etc. - no conclusi n reached (n.b. entry for 22 Nov whows made dec. but doesn't give it) hadapps w/ SCAP 1700 , 2 2 NW 45)
