(From Admiral William Do Leahy's book, "I Was There") (Page 441)
Leahy, in his book, says that in the Spring of 1945, Truman
directed Byrnes to make a study of the status and prospects of the
atomic bomb project and that on June 4th he discussed this with Byrnes.
He says that after the bomb had been tested Truman faced the
decision as to whether to use it. That he did not like the idea but
was persuaded it would shorten the war against Japan and save American
lives. Leahy expressed the opinion that the use of the bomb at Hiro-
shima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in the war against
Japan but that the Japs were already defeated and ready to surrender
because of the effective sea blockade and successful bombing with
conventional weapons.
