Haorable Harry S. Truman
ne President of the United States of America
White House
Washington, D. C.
Dear Mr. President:
As you know, everyone here in town and in the county is very
much interested in the location of the proposed General Motors
Plant at Ripley, Missouri.
Since Remington Arms has closed down, business is off from 20
to 25 per cent, and we are missing the money derived from their
payrolls. This curtailment of payrolls in this community has
already shown a very unfavorable effect, and will grow worse
as time goes on.
My understanding is the General Motors will have a payroll of
between five and six thousand employees. This would be a great
assest to Jackson County, both in business and in giving employ-
ment to the citizens. We lack payrolls in East Jackson County,
and that is a prime necessity, if this part of the county is
to continue to prosper.
I and others have thought, possibly you could advise your R.F.C.,
that it would be more desirable for the plant to be located
in Jackson County, if in your judgement, this would be a prop-
er location. The latest report is that pressure is being
brought on General Motors to locate in the North American
Bomber Plant in the Fairfax District, Kansas City, Kansas.
I hesitate to write you on a subject of this kind, when I rea-
lize you are burdened with so many heavy responsibilities.
The only excuse I can offer, is that I know, this community
is as close to your heart, as it is to ours.
Anything that you might do to further this project for our
county will be appreciated by all of the people living in and
around Independence.
Sincerly yours,
ARI
