B.H.P. Reports.
Kansas City, Mo. Friday March 26, 1920.
According to instructions received from the agency I
proceeded to the Truman & Jacobson Gents Furnishings Store
located at 104 West 12th St. arriving there at 3:30 P.M.
Operative #97 had just entered the store a few minutes
before I did and was just paying for his purchases when he gave
the clerk $4.04 then left the store. The clerk rang up the
sale on the register as 3.04 and then placed the rest of the
money in his left coat pocket. He then came to me and I told him
I wanted a shirt size 15 1/2 and he asked about what price I
wanted to pay for a shirt. I told him about $4.00. He tried to
sell me a silk shirt but I did not like them SO I bought one he
showed me the first time for $4.65 and I gave him the exact
change and then left the store.
Upon my arrival at the agency I was instructed to return
the shirt and exchange it for the silk shirt and pay the clerk
the difference. I immediately went back to the store and told the
clerk this shirt was too long in the Sleeves and that I wanted
a better shirt . He showed me some more silk shirts and I looked at
several before I could decide which one I wanted. I then decided
that I wanted a silk shirt which was $12.50 plus the tax. He
warpped it up and then did some figuring on some paper and told me
the dofference was $8.80 I counted out the money which was as
follows, one five dollar bill, one silver dollar, two one dollar
bills, a hald, a quarter and a nickle. I then left the store
long enough to hear the bell on the register ring then returned and
said I wanted some handkerchiefs and he said I have some
good ones at two for a quarter. While he was waiting on me this
time I looked at the cash register and saw the last sale was
rung up as $ $3.80 instead of $8.80. I then paid him the quarter for
the handkerchi and left the store.
When I entered the store on my second trip the clerk
was talking to a young lady in front of the store and as she left
he said to her that he would see her tonight. Then a drug clerk
wearing an apron came in the store with a package of Camel Cigarettes
and laid them on the show case and the clerk took from his
pocket the exact change .19 cents and gave the boy for the
cigarettes and then the drug clerk left the store. As he paid for
the cigarettes he remarked that he just had the exact change and that
he was pretty near broke.
He was courteous and seemed in a hurry to wait on
each customer. He was neatly dressed and kept the store very clean.
