SUMMARY OF INTELLIGENCE. From 8h Oct. 23rd to 8h Oct. 24th, 1918. No.79. I. GENERAL IMPRESSION OF THE DAY. Increase in aerial activity ever entire sector. Increase in enemy artillery activity in s/s TAVANNES, otherwise normal. Enemy apparently alert and semewhat nervous during night. II. ENEMY FRONT LINE. TRUMAN No known change, ARCHIVES AND RECORDS LIBRARY III. ENEMY ORDER OF BATTLE. U.S. SERVICE No knwon change. GOVERNMENT IV. ENEMY INFANTRY. Enemy infantry still gives evidence of nervousness, firing flares and intermittant bursts from machine guns during night throughout sector and particularly in vicinity opposite MANHEULLES. V. enery ARTILLERY. Decrease in activity except in s/s TAVANNES. s/s BOUEE. With the exception of , 20 shells which fell on MASNIL there was no activity. s/s DERAMEE. 40 Cal. 77 en RONVAUX and vicinity. 25 Cal. 77 on CHATILLON and vicinity and some shelling in back areas, caliber and objective not known. Some heavy long range shelling reported from batteries presumed to be East of statn, this amounting to about 50 shells of large caliber which fell in back areas of secter. Total for Sector : 65 Cal. 77. s/s TAVANNES. 40 Cal. 105 in vicinity just east of MOULAINVILLE la BOSSE. 102 Cal. 105 and 1.6 Cal. 77 (one gas) on EIX and vicinity including roads on ridge north of EIX. 100 Cal. 105, 20 of which were gas, fell upon the high ground in the eastern part of C.R. DAMLOUP. 12 Cal. 105 in the vicinity of DALLOUP. 312 Cal. 105 022 VERDUN and vicinity. 31 Cal. 105 vicinity of Ft. TAVANNES. A few registration shots were reported in the vicinity ef P.C. ESCARGOT. Total shells on s/s: 16 Cal. 77, 609 Cal. 105 and 15 Cal. 155. Total for entire sector: 81 Cal. 77, 609 Cal. 105, 15 Cal. 155 and 70 Caliber unknown. Batteries from fromezey, HOUTECOURT and HERLEVILLE groups active, with active batteries reported from peints, U-42.39, P-04.04, 0-90.14 and U-15.98. VI. ENEMY MOVEMENT. Visibility good. Small groups of two or three men seen moving about in vacinity of Ville-en-WOEVRE. Body of troops (number not reported) seen moving east on road, point U-32.85 at 12:30 hr. Two men seen at burning aereplane at point U-12. 58 about 13:19h. VII. ENEMY WORKS. Working party heard by patrol driving stakes and putting up wire, point U-23.01. Working party seen at T-83.72. Sounds indicating construction work heard from the vicinity of BRAQUIS. (over) -2- VIII. Enery AERONAUTICS. At 13:10h enemy plane was brought down in flames by an Allied plane. Enemy plane fell at U-12.58 in enemy lines, S even single planes, and one pábrol of five planes over sector during period. Several planes dropped propaganda over our lines and two smoke bombs were dropped in vicinity of O.P. STRASSBURG, I. 66.54. At 0.5h plane circled over sector and fired about 75 tracer bullets anto WATRONVILLE, and about the same number into RONVAUX, dropping two white flares in each town before leaving vicinity. No balloons observed. IX. MISCELLANEOUS. Some shells which fell in the vicinity of P.C. SCARGOT reported to have given otf brownish colored smoke. Unusual number of star rockets from vicinity of trenches opposite MANHEULLES and from the vicinity of BLANZEE, servral purple rockets and numerous pecmliar star rockets which broke into 20 or 30 flares. Numerous 3 star white rockets, 4 star white shain rockets, and some red fuzes seen during night throughout sector. X. ACTIVITY OF OUR OWN TROOPS. Raids CA Nil Patrols as s/s bouee. Two patrols. One reports having been fired on by machine gun from point U-23.03 s/s DERAMEE. One petrol s/s TAVANNES. Two patrols. By direction of the Chief of Staff, J. H. CABANISS, Captain, Infantry, A.
