The 129th Field Artillery moved into positions in the Foret de Hess on the night of September 23, 1918, from Froidos, in order Battery A, B, C, D, E and Flares F. It was raining-- cold and soggy night, dark as Egypt except for Fleshes from flashe from the front line and active enemy artillery. The roads were very slick, and it was hard for the horses to keep/their feet. There were also lines of trucks going to the front filled with doughboys and supplies. It was necessary for the artillery to thread its way in and out of these truck trains, sometimes going all the way into the field to get around stalled or was a wild ride- always at a trot and sometimes at a gallop. The cannoneers rode on the seats pro- ided for them--the one and only t ime they ever did by authority while on the front. It was a busy night for battery commanders. The column had to be kept closed up because if a unit had dropped behind it could never have caught up. Bat- tery F had an accident with its instrument foregon almost at the beginning of the march. It went into the ditch, turned over and broke a leg of one of the men riding on it. Each battery had accidants, horses falling down, carriages getting stuck and trucks getting croseways of the road and blocking the column. Then it was one breakneck ride to close up again. Col. Klemm was all along the co lumn keeping it closed up and encouraging the men and battery commanders to do their utmost. gone on to The battalion commanders had ahead reconnoiter the rarious battery positions.
