OCR Page 1 of 7The 129th Field Artillery moved into positions in the Foret de Hess on
the night of September 23, 1918, from Froidos, in order Battery A, B, C, D, E and
Flares
F. It was raining-- cold and soggy night, dark as Egypt except for Fleshes from
flashe from
the front line and active enemy artillery. The roads were very slick, and it was
hard for the horses to keep/their feet. There were also lines of trucks going to
the front filled with doughboys and supplies. It was necessary for the artillery
to thread its way in and out of these truck trains, sometimes going all the way
into the field to get around stalled or

always at a trot and sometimes at a gallop. The cannoneers rode on the seats pro-
ided for them--the one and only t ime they ever did by authority while on the front.
It was a busy night for battery commanders. The column had to be kept
closed up because if a unit had dropped behind it could never have caught up. Bat-
tery F had an accident with its instrument foregon almost at the beginning of
the march. It went into the ditch, turned over and broke a leg of one of the men
riding on it. Each battery had accidants, horses falling down, carriages getting
stuck and trucks getting croseways of the road and blocking the column. Then it
was one breakneck ride to close up again. Col. Klemm was all along the co lumn
keeping it closed up and encouraging the men and battery commanders to do their
