Superior Court of California SUPERIOR COURT San Francisco MASSACHUSETTS 183 Hot Springs Road TWAIN Michelsen, JUDGE HALL OF JUSTICE Santa Barbara, California July 20, 1962 Hon. H. J. Anslinger United States Representative To The United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs TRUMAN 616 Pine Street HARRY NATIONAL THEREY ARCHIVES AND Hollidaysburg, Pa. GOVERNMENT Dear Mr. Anslinger: It just does not seem possible that you are no longer the guiding spirit of the United States Bureau of Narcotics. Certain events take place in the life of our nation to which one cannot reconcile one's self. Your re- tirement from the office in which you so signally served the people of the world, is such an event. To me, it carries with it a note of great loss, notwithstanding the fact, as you have stated in your recent letter to me, that your suc- cessor, Mr. Henry L. Giordano, is a good man. I am sure that he is all of that, and that he will carry into the structure of his future services many of the fine qualities of public responsibility with which you charged your entire staff. But I still cannot get over your retirement, due to an arbitrary age limit. The enclosed article, which I took from the San Francisco Examiner, indicates that the President could have extended your tenure in office, but you yourself, it seems, wished to retire. May the years that lie ahead of you be sweet and sustaining as you look into the refresh- ing pool of public service and there find the reflection of a stout heart and a great soldier. Up to this hour, I have not heard from Barbara Kober. Perhaps she has decided to proceed with the material which you submitted to her in reference to myself. In any event, I do appreciate your thought of me. So far as the material I sent you is concerned, you may retain it as long as is serves your purpose, but after that, I should like to receive it. Should I ever get east again, I shall make it a point to get in touch wi th you at Hollidaysburg. In the mean- time keep me on your list of correspondents, for the tie of mutual interest that hs been forged in the field of public aervice between us should never be broken. Sincerely and gratefully,

Relations
