The price of shoes manufactured by the plant has held
steady in spite of 15 to 20% increases in the price of
raw materials.
Except for this, the company would easily have been able to lower
the price of its product by 15%.
41. The plant is now producing shoes at a cost of 300 francs per
pair less than formerly, not conmsidering variations in the price
of raw materials. Unfortunately this reduction in cost price could
not be passed on the the French consumer because the price of
French leather has almost doubled since last April.
42. Useless movements and time losses have been eliminated
wherever possible. The slow, fatiguing job of making cuts in the
leather uppers with hand scissors has been replaced by a pedal
equipped achine. Disagreeable and uncomfortable working conditions
have been altered, and batteries of sewing machines moved to enable
a vertical work position.
43. Substantial improvements in working conditions at this plant
include better systems of lighting, heating and ventillation. "A
shivering workman doesn't produce very much" Mr. D said. "We have
found that our higher heating bill is more than paid by higher
production.
