There follows for your info text of statement to be
made in Parliament on 28 July re apt of Shoosmith: "On
the 21st July the Prime Minister informed the house that
the UN Comd, Gen Clark, had made a rqst, which was subse-
quently agreed to by the US Govt, that an off from the
Commonwealth should be apt as a deputy Chief of Staff at
Gen Clarks Hq with duties in connection with opns in Korea.
The rqst was for an off drawn from 1. of the Common-
wealth countire prov combatant forces in Korea, and it has
been agreed with the govts of those countries that the post
should be filled by a senior United Kingdom off. The off
selected after consultation with the Commonwealth govts is
Major General S N Shoosmith, now comd the East-Anglian Dist
inthe United Kingdom. It should be made clear to the
House that Gen Shoosmith will be apt by the UN Command and
will be in all respects and ordinary member of Gen Clarks
staff with responsibility solely to him, By making this off
aval her majestys govt acpt no more responsibility for the
conduct on their behalf of the Korean opns.
There will cont to be only 1 channel for consult-
ation about Korea and that is between our reps in Wash and
the US Govt and mil auth there.
It is of course nec for us to be kept informed
of the progress of opns and of the many tech mil matters
which arise in the course of the daily work of her majestys
forces in Korea. All this liaison work will cont to be
carried out by the Chiefs of Staff reps accredited to Gen
