An excited House of Commons, which had earlier in evening

been deeply alarmed first scanty reports President Truman's

statement re A-bomb, gave roars of cheers when Attlee,

winding up foreign affairs debate last night, announced
intention visit President in Washington "in order that we
might, in an intimate way, take a wide survey of the problems
which face us today. This announcement brought dramatic
close to perhaps most serious, anxious, and responsible
debate on foreign affairs conducted by House since Labor
Party came to office in 1945. The debate had been preceded
by number important signs in country of considerable uneasi-
ness government's conduct foreign and defense policy. It
was opened by Bevin in a speech which, although cautious in
phrasing, was clearly designed take account this uneasiness.
Action
It was continued by speakers on all sides House, including

leaders of opposition Eden, Churchill and Butler-- in a
similar vein, but with heightened demands that government
reassure country re general lines policy. It was closed
by PRIMIN in a. wind-up which generally met these demands
both as regards substantive policies and immediate action.
