The Australiam Ambassador came in to take up a number of
points about Korea. He emphasized the need to maintain unity
of effort among the free world and that, in this connection,
the work of the Collective Measures Committee should afford
every opportunity to the Good Offices Committee to find a
peaceful settlement. He said further that the governments in-
volved should not be committed to military objectives without
common agreement.
The Ambassador then asked my views on the military situa-
THANK
tion in Korea with particular reference to the 38th parallel.
I said that there was considerable enemy resistance between UN
forces and the 38th parallel and that there would be some time
to deal with the political aspects of the 38th parallel. We
did not know whether the enemy has any disposition to agree to
DC/R
a cease-fire. We have had no indication of any interest in a
Anal 160
cease-fire and, in fact, his action seems to indicate con-
tinued efforts to build up his military position against us.
I said that it was fundamental that we could not accept the
creation for the enemy of a sanctuary behind the 38th parallel
Cat
similar to the one which he enjoys behind the Yalu River.
