Recd by FONMIN Subard jo 9 a.m., May 16 his request. Subardjo
USUN
presumed I was aware of announcement by his Ministry that
DCLC
any statements to press therefrom shld only be considered
DCR
official if in writing. He said he had been much embarrassed
by various mixed interpretation and tendency unfriendly
press to use oral material wrongly. I told him I had come

to him directly when concerned over his statement of being
willing trade with the devil, and had subsequently expressed
to Darmasetiawan unhappiness of my govt well as my Emb over
statements such as that attributed to Zain.
I said felt obliged mention further article printed in
MERDEKA 15th extremely critical US Govt (EMBTEL 1594). I
told Subard jo I did not for one minute venture suggest Zain
had been responsible for this article written by Diah, who
was both friend of my Emb and relative of Subardjo, but that
I saw great similarity in wording of Diah's article and
statements made to officer of my staff and to myself by
Zain. I told Subard jo that problems necessarily arose between
our govts on such matters as tin and rubber and we shld
talk frankly with each other when presenting our respective
official positions. I pointed out danger and unfairness,
however, of anyone connected with such negotiations providing
press with tendentious material for use in such a prejudiced
and untrue article as that written by Diah.
I said that in this instance as on other occasions when Amer
policy has been unfairly criticized by Indo press, I did not
intend give out any statement in rebuttal thereof. I realized
responsible offs of Indo Govt are cognizant and genuinely
appreciative of assistance which US has given Indo in past and
is continuing to give, and I preferred depend on them to make
appropriate defense of our relations whenever time comes in
Cabinet or Parliamentary debate, or if other type of publie
official statement may be required.
Subardjo said when he had made his "trade with the devil
statement he had in mind particularly reaction from leftist
groups
