D/T 0216462 CR 5427 2 MAY 1945 OPERATIONAL PRIORITY BARRY ARCHIVES & "NATIONAL RECORDS TRUMAN AND LIBRARY U.S. SERVICE TO: THE PRIME MINISTER GOVER WEAT FROM: THE PRESIDENT THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE OF APPRECIATION AND CONGRATULATION TO FIELD MARSHAL ALEXANDER IS FORWARDED WITH A REQUEST THAT IT BE TRANSMITTED TO FIELD MARSHAL ALEXANDER: "ON THIS MOMENTOUS OCCASION OF THE SURRENDER OF THE GERMAN ARMED FORCES IN ITALY, I CONVEY TO YOU FROM THE PRESIDENT AND THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES CONGRATULATIONS ON THE SIGNAL SUCCESS OF THE ALLIED ARMIES, NAVIES AND AIR FORCES UNDER YOUR COMMAND, GAINED ONLY BY PERSISTENT HEROIC EFFORT THROUGH MANY MONTHS OF A MOST DIFFICULT CAMPAIGN.
