CABINET MEETING, JANUARY 17th, 1947
THE PRESIDENT
Portal-to-portal situation. What is present status.
SECTY TREAS
Hearings are now being held to get industry view point. Atty
Gen has appeared and presented good statement.
ATTY GEN
There is a good chance of having case reviewed. Either labor or
employers will appeal case. May get it to Supreme Court in about 10
days following appeal.
ANDERSON
On hoof and mouth disease in Mexico - does not want to pay for
cattle slaughtered in Mexico. Should give aid in form of veterinarians
caustic soda and other aids. We must protect cars coming north and
keep tourists out of infected areas. American cattlemen have gotten
us into trouble seeking profit of 3 million dollars rather than the
interest of American people. The (y) bought their way through Mexican
Govt to get bulls imported from Brazil.
THE PRESIDENT
Maritime situation is critical - the Commission must continue
in shipping business.
FORRESTAL
Said unification is due to the patience of the President in
solving (?) difficulties between services.
FLEMING
Working now on extention of certain war powers - thinks it
would be good subject for Big 6 discussions.
STEELMAN
Big 4 now are reasonable men - and we should not have too much
trouble.
