Asked Dr. Nourse to give report on economic status of the country.
DR. NOURSE
Read excerpts from quarterly report.
LOVETT
Public opinion poll on Palestine - U. of Chgo U. of Michigan -
(1) 82% embargo on arms should be continued.
(2) 45% for use of U. S. armed forces in Palestine; 50% do not use
American troops.
KRUG
Urged strong bid for controls on prices & wages in the present
Congress. Next year will be too late. Feels there is a trend among
businessmen to support controls and allocations.
FOSTER (Commerce)
Subscribes the position of Krug - in order to meet requirements
we must have controls on steel, aluminum and other materials necessary
for preparedness and ERP programs.
THE PRESIDENT
Asked Royal (War) to discuss with Forrestal and Sullivan - Symington
the necessity for controls otherwise the whole economy will be adversely
affected.
ANDERSON
Very gloomy about the effectiveness of voluntary controls. They
will not work - cited bakers & distillers who went beyond ordinary &
normal requirements.
