Harriman 11
Rentzel for Commerce
GEN MARSHALL was present to receive his Cabinet chair given to him by the
President and Cabinet.
COL HOY
Briefed Cabinet on Korea.
THE PRESIDENT
Gen Bradley has reported on trip to Japan - Turkey, Greece and
Europe. Asked Lovett to repeat Bradley's findings to Cabinet.
LOVETT
Bradley and Eisenhower believe it necessary to have Greece and
Turkey on our side if we are to successfully defend Europe. Thinks it
is also vital to hold the Suez Canal despite Egyptian opposition to
British control.
ACHESON
Asked President if he would pressure McKellar and Cong Cannon on
Foreign Aid Bill appropriation.
THE PRESIDENT
Talked to Cannon about it on phone this morning. Thinks he will
be OK.
ACHESON
A change in government in Britain will not have much change in
British foreign policy. The Conservative Party if elected will be more
united on foreign policy and more responsible. Churchill is urging a
meeting of the Big Four (Stalin et al). The President is opposed.
Thinks we should work thru the United Nations organization which is set
up for this purpose. U. S. is backing British in the Egyptian crisis.
