Thursday, August 15th: BECORDS BERVICE" AND 10.00 am Honorable James E. Webb, Director, Bureau of the Budget (Called Mr. Connelly and asked for this appointment.) 10.15 am Lt. William Mason Morgenroth, USNR Captain C. H. K. Miller, USN (Captain James H. Foskett, USN) (Lt. Morgenroth brought two gifts for the President from the Chief of Car Nicobar. Gifts are model of the Nicobarese giant war canoe and an actual crossbow and arrows used by the Nicobarese for shooting pigs, monkeys and coconuts. The Nicobarese, located in a remote island in Bay of Bengal, had never heard of the United States. An interpreter, survivor of the Japanese occupation explained that Lt. Morgenroth was first representative of a great power beyond the seas to enter the islands, whereon the "mah" or chief, realized that he was being honored. A rare tribal dance was performed that night by all the young women on the island, from ages of 5 to 25 and coconut juice was presented to the distinguished guest who had a special chair. The two gifts were presented on behalf of the chief, from the Assistant Commissioner of the Islands, to the President of the United States.
