SUMMARY OF TELEGRAMS
210 - NATIONS UNITED
The Secretary believes our representative on the Security Council
should be instructed to support the UK representative's effort
to obtain a postponement of discussion by the Council of the
Ukrainian complaint against Greece until after the Greek plebiscite on
September 1.
BRAZIL
We are proposing to Brazil that our Navy lease and operate for
051 -
ten years a radio station near Recife in the interest of
hemisphere defense.
GREECE
Ambassador MacVeagh has heard that democratic activity on
05'
the part of both liberals and leftists is at a standstill in
northern Greece but that leftist political activity is not interfered with
in Athens.
051 - PORTUGAL
We are concluding for the present negotiations with Portugal
for long term base rights in the Azores. Transit rights for
our military aircraft are provided for until December 1947 under the terms
of May 30 agreement with Portugal.
051 TURKEY
Ambassador Wilson reports that the Turks are refusing to align
themselves with the Arabs on the Palestine question despite
continual pressure by the Arab states.
051 - YUGOSLAVIA
The Secretary believes that in the light of recent developments
we should do everything that we properly can do to stop further
shipments to Yugoslavia of supplies of any sort by UNRRA.
The Secretary has instructed Ambassador Fatterson to delay
051-
presenting his credentials to Tito pending written assurances from Tito con-
firming oral statements in which he expressed regrets for the loss of American
years stavies
lives and said he had issued instructions to insure that such incidents would
not recur. The Secretary hopes the UK Ambassador will also delay presenting
his credentials until the written assurances are received.
